Serendipity

On my blog-round today I read this article. Very interesting. I have often read about Lifehacker, no. 5 on the list, but have never gone there. Today was the day and my eye immediately fastened on this article, which in turn of course led to this article. And naturally I had to read the other list as well. I can honestly say that some of those phrases I haven't used. But most of them I have. However, not "talk the talk, walk the walk". That really is an awful expression!

I promise to try and avoid each and every one of them in my paper. What about you?

Of I go to the web 2.0 jungle

Last Friday we were asked about which web 2.0-applications we use in our daily life and I was taken a bit off guard, because I have never really considered if I use web 2.0-applications and what kind. Nevertheless I took on the challenge to find out and share it with all of you here on this blog. To make it a bit different I have chosen to write my contribution as a diary – a diary of my internet life.

Monday morning, damn it’s a beautiful weather – will this last the entire day? I log on to my customized iGoogle where I can see the weather forecast, and yeah, it will be a marvelous day, for once without an umbrella. At the same time I check my Google calendar and plan my day. Then, while eating breakfast, I check out my RSS-feeds from www.politiken.dk and www.borsen.dk and read the latest news. Whoops, once again time flies by and I have to be at work in half an hour. At work it’s a busy day with meetings and a lot of assignments. At lunch my colleges and I always make up the “today’s question” and the challenges is who can find the answer the quickest – you can probably imagine that it’s quite important that I win as the only librarian in the department. The question today is when was Barack Obama born? Once again Wikipedia comes to my rescue and state that he is born on 4th of August 1961, I’ll just have to werify it from another sources. Unfortunately I wasn’t the quickest, but probably the most thorough :o) Later on a college of mine ask about Google features and I show him Google labs. On the site you can find all different kinds of prototypes/beta versions from Google – a recommendable technology playground! At 5 pm I take the bus home and after shopping for groceries, I fling my self on the couch with my computer. As my daily ritual I log on to my Hotmail, Messenger and Facebook. On Facebook I have posted an announcement for an event to celebrate the launch of the Christmas beer and a lot of people have responded that they will attend. I have never really understood until now, how big and efficient a marketing tool Facebook really is.

As I browse through this text I realize that my usage of web 2.0 sites is not really impressive or innovative, so my plan is now to explore the web 2.0 jungle and try out some of the sites you all recommend – I think I’ll start with del.icio.us, Flickr and Go2web2.0. So of I go to the jungle…

Work stuff

I think that I use much of the same blogs as you do. So I would like to tell you about some of the sites, that I use in my daily work at Gentofte Library.

One of the best sites is Litteratursiden.dk. It is a page made and edited by librarians from all over Denmark.
It has a very good subject entry, that is very usefull, when people wants fiction in a specific genre or when they have read a book by a certain author and wants something that like that.
The site has a blog as well, and right now one of my favourite writers is blogging there.
Furthermore there are online reading circles. So for the web 2.0 generation this is very popular place.
Another site that I use and that I am co editing with other librarians is bng.dk. My group is the art group.
It is still very much on the beta stadium when it come to web 2.0. and later this month all the editors, will go to a meeting, where we will talk about how we can implement web 2.0 applications better than today. So maybe thats an idea for the final project....

Ruths first blog entry ever called: Something old and not so much new!

Im so sorry, but I dont have any new and interresting web 2.0 sites to share with you.
Here´s the thing...I went on maternity leave about 2 years ago and gave birth to a beautiful son named Bertil!
Now Im back in school, and I decided to take two classes on 3. semester and the 5. semester at the same time! Hence NO time for funny BLOGS or any other web 2.0 sites!
I mainly read my homework when Bertil goes to bed at 20 every night, so I cant find the time or energy to investergate the www! The only web 2.0 sites Ive been using is the simple facebook and wikipedia. Otherwise I use the danish site all about copenhagen, to keep me updated on whats going on in copenhagen. If I should be so lucky to get a night out:-)I wouldnt call aok a new and exiting web 2.0 site, but you can be a member and write comments on restaurants etc. if you wish to!
As we speak Im on my way towards librarything!

I'm your ghost co-student, because I live in England. I've been blogging for years, read it here.

Like Lennart I also use LibraryThing (link to my own page) and StumbleUpon. I use Flickr (again link to my own page) for pictures, Google video for guess what (but might soon change to Vimeo on recommendation of my eldest son who dabbles a lot in video) and Google Docs for writing, saving and sharing documents with other Google users. I use Delicious for my private bookmarks and Connotea for my LIS links. Then there's Netvibes, which I use for easy access to the blogs I follow regularly (RSS). I'm a Wordpress blogger and a Mac-user so I of course peruse all sites with those two names in them (more or less). I'm also on LinkedIn and on FaceBook. Let's connect if you're there too. Please write to me that you're from the Web 2.0 course, since I won't meet you and hence will not know your name.

Here's a useful blog to follow if you're interested in creating stuff on the web (it's in Danish).

I use Firefox for almost all my browsing, but also have Safari installed. Will definitely try out Google's browser Chrome when it becomes available for Mac. All my techie PC friends are crazy about it. My searches are lazily mainly in Google, but when I run into dead ends, I also try Cuil (pronounced cool).

I use lots of dictionaries and other info-sources. There's Merriam-Webster, which is incredibly useful. It will even teach you to pronounce the words so you won't make a fool of yourself when presenting in English. Then there's the Acronym Finder, which is useful in many walks of life. And there are two sites about hoaxes and pranks on the Internet, which I use whenever I have to convince somebody that their chain mail about rewards from Microsoft or whatever is a hoax. It's Break the Chain and Urban Legends. I make a living as a translator, so I subscribe to Ordbogen.dk. It's not perfect, but in combination with my paper dictionaries and M-W, it's very quick and not expensive. I'm a registered user at Wikipedia, which I use a lot. Here's something I've written about that for my previous course with Birger Hjørland.

Many librarians blog. Here are my favourites: Steven's Lighthouse, Phil Bradley, the Blue Skunk Blog and the legendary Mary Ellen Bates. A few other blogs, which point in the general direction of Web 2.0: On Anthropology and Economy in a web-sense, on all things web 2.0 and the Godfather of Web 2.0 Kevin Kelly.

And then there's the best content on the web: TED. (Challenge: spend 3-4 hours there and then point me to another place on the web where you can learn more in such a short time (except maybe for Videojug, but that's more hands on!).

That's all I could think of right now. More will come to mind later...

There is a lot of interesting web2.0 features, and if you don't know anything about it, this is a place to start: GO2WEB2.0 But offcourse, it might be a little too much :-)

I like the features where you can opload your fotos to the blog in severel ways. You probably all know Flickr and Picasa, but here is a site, where you can make your own slide-show in many funny ways. It's simply called Slide

If you like music, there are different tolls to f.ex. get a radio on your blog, one could be Last.fm It's easy to use, but do not allways contain what I'm looking for. Or, try Deezer

If you want to learn more about 23things, you can easily look it op at Helsingør Bibliotek, or Gentofte Bibliotek - but only in danish.
